Common GMC Canyon Problems

The 2.8L LWN Duramax turbo-diesel engine experiences diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injector clogging and SCR catalyst efficiency code P20EE, often requiring replacement of the DEF tank heater assembly and injector.
The 8L45 eight-speed automatic transmission produces a harsh 1-2 upshift clunk and intermittent slipping in 6th gear, caused by worn 4-5-6 clutch wave plate and degraded transmission fluid.
The 3.6L LGZ V6 engine develops oil leaks at the rear main seal and oil pan gasket simultaneously, resulting in oil dripping onto the exhaust crossover pipe and producing a burning smell in the cabin.
The electric power steering assist motor fails intermittently at highway speeds, causing sudden heavy steering effort and triggering DTC C0545, traced to a cracked solder joint on the EPS control module circuit board.
The rear leaf spring center bolt shears under load, allowing the rear axle to shift and causing a misaligned rear end, uneven tire wear, and a wandering sensation during highway driving.

Your California Lemon Law Rights

  • Full refund of the purchase price
  • Replacement vehicle of comparable value
  • Cash compensation (cash-and-keep settlement)
  • Attorney's fees paid by the manufacturer

GMC Canyon Lemon Law FAQ

Does my GMC Canyon diesel qualify under California Lemon Law if the DEF system keeps failing?

Yes. The emissions control system, including the DEF injector and SCR catalyst, is covered under the manufacturer's emissions warranty, which in California extends to 7 years or 70,000 miles. Repeated failures of the DEF system that cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts can qualify your Canyon as a lemon under the Song-Beverly Act.

I was told my Canyon's steering issue is caused by aftermarket tires. Can GMC deny my Lemon Law claim?

GMC may attempt to blame aftermarket modifications, but under the Song-Beverly Act, the manufacturer must prove that the modification directly caused the defect. If the EPS motor failure is an electrical component issue unrelated to tire size or type, the aftermarket tires would not be a valid defense. Keeping documentation that the tires meet OEM size specifications helps counter this argument.

Is there a time limit for filing a California Lemon Law claim on my Canyon?

The statute of limitations for Song-Beverly Act claims is four years from the date you knew or should have known the vehicle could not be repaired. However, it is best to file your claim while the vehicle is still under warranty or as soon as possible after the warranty expires. Delaying can make evidence harder to gather and may weaken your case.

What happens to my GMC Canyon after a successful Lemon Law buyback in California?

After a buyback, the manufacturer takes possession of your Canyon and must brand the title as a lemon law buyback before reselling it. The vehicle is entered into the DMV lemon law title database and any future buyer must be notified of its history. You receive your refund minus the mileage offset and are free to purchase or lease a new vehicle.
