Your G80 may qualify if…

These are common indicators under California's Song-Beverly Act. An attorney reviews the full repair and warranty history before determining whether the firm can take a case.

You bought or leased the vehicle in California.

The problem arose while a manufacturer warranty covered the vehicle.

The dealer has had repeated repair opportunities, or the vehicle has spent significant time in the shop.

The defect continues and substantially affects the vehicle's use, value, or safety.

Why a warranty isn't enough

Your warranty vs. the lemon law

A warranty is a promise to attempt repairs. The lemon law is what protects you when those repairs never stick.

The manufacturer's warranty

  • The manufacturer decides which repairs to attempt.
  • It only obligates them to keep trying — not to actually fix the problem.
  • When the warranty ends, the manufacturer's repair obligation ends.

California's lemon law

  • Kicks in when repeated repairs don't fix a substantial defect.
  • Can require a refund, a replacement vehicle, or a cash settlement.
  • Your legal claim can survive after the warranty ends — if the defect was reported while it was in force.
  • When you win, the manufacturer pays your attorney fees — not you.

Common Genesis G80 Problems

Smartstream 2.5T engine timing chain tensioner loses hydraulic pressure at cold startup, producing a chain rattle for 3-5 seconds and setting DTC P0016 for camshaft-crankshaft correlation error on bank 1.
8-speed wet DCT mechatronic unit develops internal wiring harness chafing, causing random transmission fault warnings, limp mode engagement, and stored DTCs P0715 and P0720 for input and output speed sensor circuits.
Active noise cancellation (ANC) system microphone mounted in the headliner near the B-pillar fails, resulting in excessive low-frequency road noise intrusion and an inoperative cabin quiet mode feature.
Rear trunk lid power closing mechanism pinch sensor becomes overly sensitive after water exposure, causing the trunk to reverse direction repeatedly and fail to latch, requiring trunk actuator and sensor replacement.
Front lower control arm ball joints on 19-inch wheel equipped models exhibit accelerated wear, producing a steering wander condition and audible popping during full-lock turns at low speeds.

Your California Lemon Law Rights

Under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, if your Genesis G80 has a substantial defect that cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to:

  • Full refund of the purchase price
  • Replacement vehicle of comparable value
  • Cash compensation (cash-and-keep settlement)
  • Attorney's fees paid by the manufacturer

Genesis G80 Lemon Law FAQ

My G80 keeps going into limp mode but the dealer says they cannot find anything wrong. What are my options under California Lemon Law?

Under Song-Beverly, the inability of the dealer to diagnose or repair the defect actually strengthens your claim. Each visit where the problem is reported but unresolved counts as a repair attempt. Maintain detailed records of every dealer visit, including the symptoms you describe, and request copies of all repair orders.

Can I get my down payment and monthly payments refunded if my G80 is a lemon?

Yes. Under the Song-Beverly Act, a lemon law buyback requires the manufacturer to refund all payments made toward the vehicle, including your down payment, all monthly loan or lease payments, taxes, and registration fees. The only deduction is the mileage offset calculated from miles driven before the first repair attempt.

Does the California Lemon Law cover my G80 if the defect is only cosmetic?

Song-Beverly requires that the defect substantially impair the use, value, or safety of the vehicle. A purely cosmetic issue, such as a minor paint blemish, may not qualify. However, recurring paint defects, persistent interior trim failures, or defects that diminish resale value significantly may meet the threshold of impairing the vehicle's value.

Genesis repaired my G80 once and the problem came back. How many more attempts do I need to allow?

Under Song-Beverly, two repair attempts for the same defect create a rebuttable presumption that the vehicle qualifies as a lemon, provided the defect substantially impairs the vehicle. After the second failed attempt, you should send a written demand to Genesis Motors and consult with a California lemon law attorney to evaluate your case.
